Helpful Responses to Initial Awakening

Here are some basic guidelines that are helpful in responding to an initial kundalini awakening or spiritual emergence.

  • Be curious instead of fearful.  This is a new experience and somewhat similar to the chaos of going through puberty.  The difference is that everyone understands the function of puberty, and few understand the transformation of kundalini.  Just be curious and open.

  • You might think of kundalini as a feminine power inside of you – a power to re-create you. You can speak to the energy and ask it to teach you and to ease up if it is too difficult.  You are creating a relationship with an essential part of your own human/spirit self.

  • Accept it. Remember all resistance (to what is) enhances suffering. You may be uncomfortable or inconvenienced or have trouble sleeping as it tends to get active while you try to rest.  But if you can open to it and trust it is releasing stress, or restructuring some essential aspect of yourself, you can accept what it is doing with much less anxiety.

  • Learn to live in the space of unknowing. Trust the emptiness as if it held God.  The little me (ego) can be terrified of this process, but the awareness and cells receive it. It’s a realignment- just allow it to happen- say yes.

  • Kundalini is pure consciousness. It tends to awaken the cells in your body to love and to life. If you can just relax with it and focus on NOW instead of creating stories about it the process will move more easily. It’s about letting go of all the old programming- everything that’s not authentic so you can be free to be the true you. From an esoteric perspective, this is what the clearing of chakras is all about.

  • Be in tune with your deepest desire for Truth.

  • Don’t make a drama of this, or give it undue attention. The changes simple occur. You can’t claim credit for this because it is a spontaneous phenomena, available to everyone.

  • A common problem is insomnia.  If the energy keeps you awake at night try to find some napping time in the day.  Experiment with melatonin or dietary changes, giving up electronics after 7 at night, reading something boring or soothing, taking long walks.  It is important that you do not go days and nights without any sleep because the mind becomes more disjointed without sleep and this is a common reason that someone may think you need to be hospitalized (where you will be medicated to sleep).  You may find you need less sleep than usual, especially if you meditate deeply, but you still need some sleep.

  • Avoid all intoxicants and stimulants.

  • Find someone who will support you and is willing to hold a broad and calm perspective about what you are experiencing.

  • Be welcoming… you are touching your true nature… you can’t get away from it so dance with it.  Understand how this process supports a true awakening – read The Awakening Guide, for a deeper understanding of where it is going.
